Cutting of the cake song

Aug 13, 2022 | Wedding Advice

“‘A party without a cake is just a meeting’”
— Julia Child

The cutting of the cake signifies the couple’s abundance and generosity in their lives and their bestowed future together as a married couple – hence why the couple and each guest shares a slice of the cake (if they wish to).

The newlyweds cut the cake, one hand on top of the other, surrounded by friends and family. Traditionally the groom’s right hand must be on top of the bride’s hand, but you can do what feels right and comfortable for you. Same-sex couples can choose to do it in any order they prefer or simultaneously on the count of 3.

OK, we get it. It’s probably not a priority on your to-do list when planning a wedding, but choosing a song to play while you’re cutting the cake at your wedding reception can be sweet and a lot of fun.

Here are some ideas to help you choose a song;

You can use the remainder of your Entrance Song (90% of wedding receptions would cut the cake as soon as the Bride & Groom are announced and enter the festivities)

You can ask the DJ to use their own discretion and select a song based on some of the music tastes that you have already discussed for the rest of the celebrations

If you have an acoustic duo for the ceremony, you could play the original version of one of the songs you selected for your ceremony

You could play an acoustic version of your entrance song, as the entrance song can be a little too high-energy sometimes for the moment you’re cutting the cake

You can have fun and play something random and related to cake and sweet things!

Most of the time, it’s usually a fairly relaxed, romantic song, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because all eyes will be on you both as you’re cutting the cake. There will be lots of cameras, lots of loving smiles and even some cheers and clapping.
