20 Benefits of Winter Weddings

Sep 13, 2022 | Wedding Advice

“There’s no such thing as good weather or bad weather. There’s just weather and your attitude towards it.”
— Louise Hay

During the warmer months of Australia’s peak weeding season, weddings have the benefit gorgeous weather and glorious backdrops, especially if you’re getting married at a winery or outdoor venue. However, there are pros and cons to every season and after attending hundreds of weddings over the years, I have discovered that I LOVE A WINTER WEDDING. Now, call me crazy, I know it’s awful feeling cold, but the benefits of a Winter wedding far out way the disadvantageous. Hear me out!

1. INCREASED AVAILABILITY & BETTER PRICES
If you’re planning a wedding during Autumn and Spring in Australia, you better get in quick when booking your wedding venues and suppliers. Usually the best quality and most popular wedding suppliers are fully booked between 18 months to 2 years in advance. So it’s hard to secure your top picks! However, during Winter this is less likely to happen. If you have your heart set on a certain venue or wedding supplier (i.e. photographer, makeup artist or entertainer and so on), you are more like to book your complete dream team during off peak wedding season (Winter). Additionally, venues and suppliers often have discounted prices or sales for Winter weddings, so you’ll be able to save money and stick to your budget.

2. MORE TIME & ATTENTION FROM WEDDING SUPPLIERS
Venues and suppliers aren’t going to be so run off their feet during the cooler months, so at Winter weddings they’ll be more attentive, have increased energy and in a better position to perform at their best. You’ll get the ultimate experience from their craft! It will be easier to communicate with them, as they will be more responsive and enthusiastic. Most wedding suppliers are high performers anyway, but they are only human and there’s only so much they can do and a certain amount of time they have during peak wedding season.

3. AVOIDANCE OF CELEBRATION FATIGUE
During the warmer months, there are not only more weddings that guests attend, but more events, parties, public holidays, festivals and celebrations. Guests start suffering from ‘celebration fatigue’ by the end of each party season (think about how it feels by the time Christmas & New Years Eve arrives or after Mad March & Easter). Why not give them some space during the peak party season and spice things up for them as things start to slow down over Winter. Have a Winter Wedding to bring some spark into their lives during the duller time of the year.

4. BETTER HONEYMOONS
When it’s Winter in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. That means you can escape the cold weather for a few weeks on your honeymoon overseas. Added bonus, if you plan on traveling to the North of Australia, you’ll be able to make the most of their perfect dry season too! You’re more likely to save money on a Winter wedding in Australia, so why not spend those savings on a honeymoon overseas?

5. SAVING MONEY ON TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION
If you’re unable to travel overseas or it’s not your cup of tea, the good news is that you can also save money on traveling within Australia during the Winter months. Because it’s not peak tourism season, you’ll most likely find some good deals on travel and accommodation.

 6. GLORIOUS PHOTOS THANKS TO BETTER SUNLIGHT
If you want the ultimate stunning collection of wedding photos, then Winter is the best time of the year to capture them. Avoid the ghastly shadows across your face and on others and evade those squinting eyes and that wrinkly face. You’ll also have less people in your group photo with their sunnies on – it’s always better to see their entire smiling faces in your lasting memories.

The sun is at its lowest point in the sky during Winter, which means the sunlight needs to shine through more of the earth’s atmosphere before it reaches us on land. Therefore, the light is softer and much more flattering in photos. Another bonus, the sun is going to take longer to set, so you have more time to make the most of that glorious light during sunset.

7. SMOOTH SAILING SCHEDULE
Because the sun sets earlier in the evening during Winter, you can enjoy a seamless schedule on your wedding. Often in the warmer months, couples like to step out of the reception around 7-8pm for a sunset photos, but this often takes away from their full & rich experience of the reception and holds up formalities and dance time later in the evening. In Winter, you can have your ceremony, move straight into all the photos with the wedding team and then sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the evening at the Reception.

8. MORE TIME WITH YOUR LOVED ONES
Because you’re not stepping out for sunset photos during the Reception, you’ll be able to spend more time with your friends and family attending the wedding. The day already goes so fast; if you blink, you will miss it. So soak up the loving vibes from your guests as much as you can.

9. FEELING DEM COZY FEELS
Don’t get me wrong, it is cold at a Winter wedding, especially if you’re in a dress and high heels – however, it’s only temporary. You’re not usually outside for long at Winter weddings, but when you are it’s a wonderful opportunity to wear beautiful, cozy jackets, classy gowns, faux fur, scarves and rug up with blankets. This gives a warm, fuzzy vibe at weddings and it’s comforting huddling up with your loved ones while your celebrating love. It’s a bonus if you have a wedding at a venue that has an open or combustion fire, the warmth in the room is so soothing and cheering. Plus, by the time you have a few drinks and mingle amongst the guests, you won’t even notice the cold that much.

10. COOL-ER DANCEFLOORS
Let’s face it – it gets hot and sweaty on the dancefloor at weddings and its not pretty. During Winter and the cooler months, you can go HARD on the dancefloor and not have to worry about a thing! No makeup melting off your face, no strong smelling odours, no overheating, no need to leave the dancefloor because you’re too hot! But, if you do get too hot, all you need to do is step outside for a few minutes to cool off in the fresh air and you’re back on. No more missing out on all the fun or your fave track on the d-floor because you’re too hot.

11. NEW DINING EXPERIENCE
We recently played at a Winter wedding and the couple decided to serve their guests their favourite cuisine, which perfectly matched the comfy atmosphere of the day. They loved curries, chilli con carne & home style meals, so they served shared plates of these meals at each table. It was amazing! Plus, it was refreshing to experience something new when dining at a wedding – it was a welcoming new twist!

12. IT WON’T BE STINKING HOT
Yes, it’s cold in Winter, but it’s bloody hot on a Summer day in Australia too! Even in Autumn and Spring, the sun can still have a lot of bite. During winter, you don’t need to worry about sweating or overheating and being drained by the sun or dehydration (which can really take away from your enjoyment of the day).

13. NO FRIZZY HAIR
During the cooler months, you’ll also avoid those humid days, which can ruin all that money and effort you put into your gorgeous hair styles and makeup and drain your energy until you’ve got nothing left.

14. BLACK TIE SAVVY
During the warmer months, Winter is a much more comfortable option for anyone wearing a suit. Plus, if you were planning on having a Black Tie or Formal wedding, then Winter is the season for you. Tuxedos weren’t built for the heat of the Summer.

15. SOMETHING A LITTLE OUT OF THE ORDINARY
There is nothing more refreshing than a change and every Winter wedding I’ve had the privilege of attending has felt so new, invigorating and serendipitous. The atmosphere and energy feels fresh and original and there are extraordinary colour palettes to choose from during the cooler season. From flowers to décor to colour palette, there are elements of the Winter season to inspire your theme that will be distinctive from other months. Think of romantic and moody vibes from deep reds and forest greens or a grounding feeling from wooden and dark hues.

16. IT RAINS ALL YEAR AROUND…SO WHY TRY TO AVOID IT?
A major reason couples decide not to get married in Winter is because they’re concerned it might rain. The trouble is, it rains all year around. Granted it is more likely to rain in Winter, but there is no guarantee that if you hold your wedding during other seasons it’s not going to rain. There are so many contingencies you can put in place if it does rain – have a backup venue with shelter for the ceremony, use umbrellas and have fun with them in the photos, supply gas heaters so guests can warm up and dry out in case they get a little damp.

17. MEMORABLE MOMENTS
If it’s raining at a ceremony, guests will probably need to help pick up everything and move quickly under shelter before it starts…and from personal experience, it feels good to play a role in the couples’ big day! Plus, it makes a great story! It’s memorable and heartwarming.

It rained on our wedding day and we saw it as a blessing. It felt cleansing, purifying and healing; like it was Mother Nature nourishing our love so it could grow into so much more for the future. At the end of the day, it was never about the weather. It was about our love story, our sacred union and the love in the air!

18. MORE RSVPs.
Because there are generally less events during the cooler months, guests find it more feasible and have increased availability to attend your special day. There will be less likelihood of a clash with other dates and events. During busier months, it can be tricky, especially if you guests have young children.

19. BE A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNELS
easonal adjustment is a real thing for many people, however an exciting event like a wedding is uplifting and inspiring and offers everyone something to look forward to. Your wedding will be a mood booster during Winter, so why not give them the opportunity to lift their spirits and bring some warmth into their lives during the cool months.

20. YOUR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WILL BE VALUED MORE
Amongst the holiday seasons of the warmer months, wedding anniversaries can get lost amongst all the action. You’ll be less likely to forget your wedding anniversary because you’re not so busy or stressed and you’ll have more time and energy to celebrate it. Not only will your wedding be something to look forward during the cooler months, but your anniversary will continue to brighten up your Winter every year!

So there are loads of awesome reasons why you should have a Winter wedding, but at the end of the day, if you decide to do what’s true for you and you love it – it doesn’t matter! Have the right attitude and trust all will be well and you’ll have the time of your life…no matter what time of the year it is!
